Flooded Veessen

Veessen is a village of around 800 residents in central Holland, located along the IJssel River, a branch of the Rhine that empties into Lake Ijssel (formerly an inlet of the North Sea, but now a fresh water lake). The residential areas of the village are mostly protected by a dyke, while a recreational area for tourists consisting of a marina, camping areas, a restaurant, and a modest hotel exists in an unprotected area next to the river.

In recent years, this area was flooded by high water levels and other towns in the area were also threatened. To decrease the risk of flooding, several measures along the IJssel river were carried out including widening the river bed, reinforcing dykes, and creating an 8 km long high water channel bypass (see video below) to be constructed in 2013-2016.

This year the municipality of Heerde invited Waterfronts NL participant WA Yachting Consultants to make a plan for the redevelopment of the existing waterfront with additional recreational facilities to serve residents and tourists alike. The project involved the extension and re-design of the existing marina, a new mooring and pontoons for the ferry docks, dredging to increase the water depth of the area, a boat ramp and transporter, sanitary, storage and repair facilities, extension of the hotel-restaurant with a river side terrace, river side cottages, facilities for campers, a parking area and a service and tourist information facility. A feasibility study of the redevelopment was calculated including recommendations on management of new facilities.

The project is an example of a quickscan assessment, where expertise in waterfront projects can be used efficiently in a cost-effective manner for projects of all scales and sizes. Waterfronts NL partner Royal HaskoningDHV and different suppliers were involved in developing accurate cost estimates.
